In the wake of the MBBS courses offered by the Madhya Pradesh government in Hindi, the Andhra Pradesh chapter of the Indian Medical Association has strongly opposed the move to introduce MBBS in regional languages and termed it a retrograde and detrimental decision.

Dr. C. Srinivasa Raju, IMA, AP chapter president, and general secretary Dr. G. Nanda Kishore expressed their strong opposition to the move to safeguard the interests of medical students, the medical fraternity, and modern medicine and healthcare. Expressing his concern about the long-standing disadvantages, Dr. Raju stated that students from north India can understand Hindi, but what about students who belong to southern and north-eastern states? He added that the inability of teachers to teach the subject in Hindi is a major concern.

He stated that in India, students migrate from state to state for medical education, and after graduation, they have to get out and work wherever their services are required. Similarly, there is no advantage in offering courses in Hindi as it will not be helpful to graduates who are planning to pursue higher education, fellowship, or research outside of India. Though, the teaching and learning process can be carried out in a bilingual manner. The core structure of the medical courses should be in a language that is recognized globally.

Several experts have stated that the Union government is offering courses in regional languages in an attempt to bring down the standards of modern medicine to the level of AYUSH and limit doctors to their native regions.
